English Elm Timber, Boards & Slabs

English elm is an increasingly rare sight in the UK. Once as plentiful as oak and ash, it was widely used for furniture making in England, valued for its strength, distinctive grain and resistance to splitting and cracking.

At Oak Heart Milling, we are fortunate that some English elm trees which need to be felled in Sussex find their way to our East Sussex sawmill. Here, the timber can begin a new chapter. We mill the trees into elm boards and elm slabs, dry the timber and prepare it for furniture making, floorboards, shelves and other woodworking projects.

English Elm Timber for Furniture Makers & Designers

Finding good English elm timber has become increasingly difficult since Dutch elm disease dramatically reduced the number of trees across the country. Sussex remains an important area for elm, which means we occasionally have the opportunity to mill trees that have had to be felled.

Rather than allowing this valuable material to end its life as biomass, we want to see it put to good use. Our elm wood is milled and dried with furniture makers, designers and other woodworking projects in mind.

As hands-on English elm specialists, we understand the timber because we mill and work with it ourselves. If you are comparing elm timber suppliers or providers online, you can speak to us directly about what you are making, the material you require and what we currently have available.

Why Choose English Elm?

There is a reason elm was historically such an important furniture-making timber in England. It combines strength with an unmistakable grain pattern, producing pieces with plenty of natural character.

English elm also has the advantage of being resistant to splitting and cracking compared with many other species. For furniture makers and designers, those qualities make it a timber worth preserving and using thoughtfully.

No two pieces of elm wood look exactly the same. The grain, figuring and colour of an individual board or slab become part of the finished piece rather than something to hide, making elm particularly appealing when the timber itself is intended to be a feature.

English Elm & Dutch Elm Disease

Dutch elm disease has had a devastating effect on English elm trees. Trees affected by the disease may eventually need to be felled, including where removal is necessary for safety reasons.

Importantly for the timber we receive, the disease does not prevent the wood from being milled and used. When suitable felled elm reaches our sawmill, we have an opportunity to preserve the timber and give it a useful second life.

For Joe, that matters. There is something particularly rewarding about taking timber from a tree that might otherwise become biomass and seeing it eventually become furniture or another lasting feature in someone's home.

Elm Boards, Elm Slabs & Sawn Timber

When English elm arrives at our sawmill, we mill it into usable elm boards and elm slabs before the timber is dried and prepared for its next purpose.

Depending on your project and current availability, elm sawn timber can provide material for furniture, interior features and other woodworking applications. Large elm slabs can showcase the natural grain across a substantial surface, while individual boards give makers the flexibility to select timber suited to their particular design.

If you have been looking online for elm boards, elm slabs or other English elm for sale, get in touch before planning your project around a particular piece or quantity. Availability depends on the timber that comes into the sawmill, so we prefer to discuss what we currently have and what you intend to make.

Elm Floorboards & Elm Shelves

Furniture is not the only way to put this distinctive timber to use. Once milled and dried, English elm can also be prepared for practical interior applications including elm floorboards and elm shelves.

These uses allow the grain and natural variation of the wood to remain visible, bringing the character of English elm into the fabric of a room.

If you have a particular application in mind, tell us what you are planning. We can discuss the elm timber currently available and whether it is appropriate for your project.

Elm Furniture Made in East Sussex

If you love the appearance of English elm but would rather have the finished piece made for you, Oak Heart Milling also creates bespoke elm furniture.

Every piece begins with the timber itself. Individual boards and slabs can be selected for their grain pattern, colour and character before being transformed into furniture for the home or garden at our East Sussex workshop.

This close connection between sawmilling and furniture making means the story of the timber is not lost along the way. Our aim is simple - to give these trees another life as useful, characterful pieces that can remain in people's homes for years to come.

Giving English Elm Another Life

English elm was once a familiar part of the English landscape and an important source of furniture-making timber. Today, every suitable tree that reaches our sawmill represents an opportunity to make good use of a material that has become much harder to find.

We are passionate about ensuring that the elm we mill has the chance to live on. Turning a felled tree into boards, slabs, flooring, shelving or furniture means its value and natural beauty are preserved rather than lost.

It is an approach that sits at the heart of Oak Heart Milling - understanding where timber has come from, respecting the material and making the most of what each tree can provide.
